Four games in four weeks failed.
Well… mostly. One game actually made it to the finish line. Another one didn’t make it in time to even make it two games in four weeks as it became painfully clear that my old computer is simply not built to run Unity 6.3. Waiting several minutes just to open the editor, watching the loading bar bounce back and forth for far too long after every tiny code change, all while squeezing everything out of 8 GB of RAM and a hard drive from the stone age — that alone was enough to test my stubbornness and motivation.
But the computer wasn’t the only reason. Work, an hour-long drive to and from it, and then my car breaking down right in the middle of the challenge. And since I’m both poor and stubborn, the only mechanic I could afford was… me. So between debugging Unity and debugging a car, something had to give. Spoiler: it was the games.
Still, it wasn’t a waste of time. One uncomfortable lesson stood out. I always thought that because I’m constantly busy, I must also be efficient. Turns out, a lot of time quietly disappears somewhere between getting home and going to sleep. The only way forward now is to start documenting where time actually goes — hour by hour — instead of just working without a plan.
As for the computer: I finally admitted defeat. An upgrade is unavoidable. The scrooge in me cried a little, but the old gearhead part of my brain got excited when it turned into a “most bang for buck” hunt. Parts are ordered. Assembly will happen soon. More on that later.
P.S. This is going to be fun.
